Branch Operating Guidelines

The BMF has published Branch Operating Guidelines for the safe operation of builders’ merchants while Covid-19 restrictions continue.

The 18-page document sets out guidelines and additional precautions to follow in the office, at trade counters, during customer and supplier deliveries, customer collection and tool hire.

The Guidelines incorporate Public Health England (PHE) social distancing and hygiene procedures and have been prepared in consultation with merchants, Highways England and the Construction Leadership Council, which has itself published Site Operating Procedures for use on all building sites to facilitate safe working.

This document is for members of the BMF only. To view this document, please sign in and click here.

Any merchant requiring equipment for the implementation of the guidelines should contact the following BMF Supplier Members.

What our members say...

"I would like to personally express my thanks and gratitude to the BMF for taking such a proactive role in advising and communicating with its membership during the coronavirus crisis. It is accurate to state that the BMF have been on the front foot throughout and I am pleased to declare that I have used the BMF as my ‘go to’ source for information during this crisis. I have felt very fortunate and proud to be part of the Federation. It has been quite remarkable how you have achieved continued proactivity with your membership whilst having to restructure and reorganise your own working practices. Very well done to all staff members." - Tony Hobbs, Southern Sheeting

"John Newcomb has been so pro-active through this whole issue and what a brilliant job John and his team have done at the BMF in trying to help us all. Once again on behalf of our businesses, can i please say a huge thanks to you and everyone at the BMF for all your help and support. It is genuinely appreciated by us." - Stewart.G.Shaw (Jnr), Cowal Building & Plumbing Supplies Ltd.

Key points from John's video brief

This is the third video in the series of videos and letters from John Newcomb, BMF CEO, to inform all of our members what the BMF are doing throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

The video covers the BMF’s Branch Operating Guidelines, which have been developed along with a supporting a video, to help you to successfully return back, and to implement a safe working practice within your organisation.

Work being undertaking on Business Rate Relief is also covered.

John also talks about the new Construction Leadership Council COVID-19 website, which showcases some of the amazing projects that the industry has undertaken during the COVID-19 crisis, including BMF members.

Another major project that the BMF has been working on is setting up a Product Availability Group, jointly chaired by John and Peter Caplehorn, the Chief Executive of the Construction Products Association, (CPA).

The group meets every two weeks and consists of major house builders, tier one contractors, small house builders, the five largest builders’ merchants and the five largest manufacturing suppliers. It is looking critically now at the products likely to be in heavy demand and products where there may well be shortages within the future.

And finally, our work with the Construction Leadership Council on an industry recovery plan, is also discussed in this video.
