What are the effects of Brexit on the building materials supply chains?
The decision taken on 23 June 2016 to leave the EU has implications for the building materials’ supply chain. The BMF has begun looking at what they will be for our members. Two obvious aspects are international trade and regulation.
Latest industry estimates show that 78% of the materials & products used here originate from within the United Kingdom - meaning 22% are imported like timber and tiles. We do not want Brexit to be used as cover to raise prices without reason or tariffs imposed unnecessarily.
EU legislation can sometimes be in the interests of our members - notably energy-efficiency of buildings, renewable energy and product standards. But leaving offers the chance for a fresh look at regulations that are not working properly - notably VAT, procurement rules, and HGV driver training.
