The BMF is the only organisation that represents and protects the interests of builders merchants, plumbing, heating, roofing, decorative and timber merchants and their suppliers in the UK and Ireland.

We are the authoritative voice for the building materials distribution sector, conveying the views and issues that face merchants and suppliers, to the widest possible audience.

Total membership from 1 Jan 2024 stands at 950 member companies who together have combined sales of over £44.9bn and employ over 208,000 people in the building materials industry.

BMF’s 498 merchant members, including 74 from Ireland operating out of 129 branches, make up a total of over 5,800 branches across the UK and Ireland.

The BMF is the active hub of merchant and supplier activity in the UK working closely with allied industry groups and regulatory bodies such as trading standards and planning departments, to ensure that issues affecting member merchants and suppliers are tackled promptly and effectively. The BMF is an active lobbyist with local and central government in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and has an impressive track record of achievements.

We are totally dedicated to the interests of our members, providing training and professional and knowledgeable support through services such as Trustpilot, Intelligent Employment Plus, Specialist Insurance Plus, Safety Plus, Energy Plus, and Transport Plus, as well as organising key events where members can meet and exchange ideas with fellow merchants, suppliers, and leading industry figures. We work continually to ensure that merchants survive and thrive in an increasingly competitive and fast-developing market.

Political Representation

The BMF provides an authoritative, co-ordinated and collective voice for the builders’ merchant trade. We provide the collective perspective because we advance, defend or support the interests of our members and we fight to ensure merchants’ way of working is recognised and protected. We arrange visits from local MPs and local Government officials to merchant members’ premises. The BMF offers reputable, balanced and convincing input to inform strategy, policy and funding options for Government and regulatory bodies and to protect our members’ interests against unwelcome or unworkable regulations.

The BMF collaborates with a number of major industry partners such as the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), CBI and the FMB to further the interests of the building material industry. We explore common aims, forge alliances and conduct joint assignments to channel members’ interests with other trade associations, professional societies and environmental or consumer groups.
