The Product Knowledge Programme has been developed through a partnership with BMF and The Manchester College, one of the largest providers of flexible and distance learning. The aim of the modules is to help improve the understanding of building materials and essential skills for trade counter and sales staff, and to help your employees provide a consistently high level of service to your customers.
The open learning element of the modules means that staff can gain qualifications without having to be away from work. To complete a Product Knowledge Module the delegate is required to answer a selection of self-check questions and assignments, which are then verified by a tutor.

What can you achieve?
Candidates can achieve a variety of different Certficiates as outlined below. Please note that you will only need to complete the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules once.
Construction Materials Distribution Foundation Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of all 3 of the Foundation Modules - Heavyside Materials, Lightside Materials and Commercial Practice.
C & G 6117 Construction Materials Distribution Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules plus any 3 product modules.
The Building Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules plus any 3 of the following Modules - Cement & Plaster / Bricks & Mortar / Aggregates & Blocks / Drainage Below Ground / Major Property Problems / Damp Proof Course and Roofing Felts / Paint Systems, Wallcoverings and Sealants / Glass / Insulation Products / Hard Landscaping / Heavyside Materials.
The Plumbing Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules plus any 3 of the following Modules - Plumbers Brassware / Drainage Above Ground / Kitchens / Bathrooms.
The Heating Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules plus any 3 of the following Modules - Central Heating / Underfloor Heating / Commercial Heating / Tubes, Fittings & Flanges / Valves / Boilers & Replacement Parts / Industrial Plastics.
The Timber Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules plus any 3 of the following Modules - Timber & Panel Products / Manufactured Joinery Products & Ironmongery / Roofwork / Heavyside Materials.
The Electrical Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules plus any 3 of the following Modules - Fundamentals of Electricity / Lamps & Lighting / Luminaires / Cables & Wiring Accessories / Switchgear, Distribution & Protection / Industrial Controls / Industrial Products / Electrical Heating & Ventilation.
The Plant and Equipment Hire Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules plus Hire Book One, Hire Book Two and Hire Book Three.
The Climate Management Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety and Customer Care Modules plus any 3 of the following Modules - Refrigeration / Air Conditioning / Electrical Heating & Ventilation / Fundamentals of Electricity / Industrial Controls / Central Heating / Insulation Products and Underfloor Heating. The Sustainable Building Products MOL is an obligatory module for obtaining this certificate.
The Interior Building Products Certificate
Awarded for successful completion of the Health & Safety, Customer Care and Interior Building Products Modules plus any 2 of the following Modules - Insulation / Luminaires / Lightside Materials / Manufactured Joinery Products and Ironmongery / Paint Systems, Wallcoverings & Sealants / Cables & Wiring Accessories / Lamps & Lighting / Tiles & Tiling Products.
